Social Engineering is the science of manipulating a person's behaviour, often without them realising it.

It is a technique used by fraudsters and hackers to elicit confidential information which can then be used to commit a crime, carry out a hacking attack or steal data.

This can be achieved by making a telephone call and pretending to be someone in authority who is entilted confidential information, or by sending an email that purports to come from another person in the organisation asking for the details, it could be by just turning up at the office of the target and persuading them to let you in or divulge the information required.  The possibilities are almost endless and they are being employed as you read this.
